Happy Mid-autumn Festival! Its the time for eating mooncakes, gazing at the moon and playing with lanterns. Have you thought about sharing your mooncakes with your pets? We probably shouldn't offer mooncakes to our pets, as mooncakes are very oily and sweet, which may result in indigestion or contribute to a more serious condition called pancreatitis. Many pets suffer from pancreatitis, however, not many owners know what it means. What is pancreatitis?

The pancreas is a gland situated close to the stomach that plays two important roles: the secretion of digestive enzymes to help break down food and the secretion of insulin and glucagon that regulate sugar metabolism.

When an animal has pancreatitis, the pancreas becomes inflamed and sore. Digestive enzymes that are normally released only during digestion are released too early, and they begin to digest the body itself. The surrounding tissue becomes further inflamed which can then damage the nearby liver. Toxins are released into the body causing widespread damage and it is very painful. In severe cases, the inflammation can affect large parts of the body. Pancreatitis can affect both dogs and cats.

If left untreated severe cases of pancreatitis can be fatal. Most cases recover well following treatment.

Unfortunately we don't know exactly what causes pancreatitis, some influencing factors include trauma, toxins, and tumors, however often we never find out the exact cause. Schnauzers are a high-risk breed.

During this treatment of pancreatitis the pet will need to be in hospital - putting the patient on an IV drip, antibiotics, pain medication, anti-vomiting medication and withholding food for a day or two may be part of the treatment plan. Cases can take up to a couple of weeks to fully resolve, and some patients with chronic pancreatitis may have relapses in the future. High-risk pets may need to be on a low-fat diet to help reduce the chance of recurrence.

Although a very serious condition, most pets recover well from pancreatitis following treatment in hospital.

If your pets feel unwell after eating human food. Please contact the vet clinic immediately.
